One of the most celebrated artists of the contemporary scene occupies with her sculptures the entire space of Roberto Alban Art Gallery

Roberto Alban Art Gallery presents from May 18th, for guests, and from May 19th until July 19th to the public, the exhibition Iole de Freitas – A escrita do movimento, with a site specific and 12 works, between new and historical ones by the Minas-born artist who lives in Rio, one of the exponents of the contemporary panorama. With a celebrated trajectory that includes exhibitions at the New York MoMA and at Documenta 12, in Kassel, Germany, Iole de Freitas (Belo Horizonte, 1945) will occupy the entire space of the gallery, creating in site a work with 3.5 meters in diameter and six meters in height. A book-catalogue of the exhibition will be released in June, with an interview given by the artist to Marc Pottier, curator of the exhibition, and graphic design by Bitty Nascimento e Silva. Roberto Alban Art Gallery represents Iole de Freitas in Bahia.
Besides the site specific, six “Untitled” works made this year specifically for this exhibition, in stainless steel sheets, like the two 2.20 meter and 2.45 meter sculptures, and four other new ones with dimensions that vary from 75cm to 40cm are also part of the exhibition. The recent works maintain the same investigation about the relation between weight and lightness - “the big flights and big stops”, as Iole de Freitas points out – that the artist has developed since 2000; she started to make them in 2013, with heavy steel sheets. She says that this investigation was "radicalized” in the exhibition carried out at Rio de Janeiro MAM’s Monumental Space, between July 2016 and last April. And it’s the unfolding of this work, in another scale, that will be presented at Roberto Alban Art Gallery. “These works keep the same internal tension and the investigation of weight and lightness, since I work with steel sheets and not with polycarbonate".
The curator Marc Pottier selected for A escrita do movimento two works from 2013, in polycarbonate and stainless steel tubes, that have marked her production since 2000, one of them is a spinal cord with 2.7 meters in height.
Other four emblematic works made by Iole de Freitas in 1992 and recreated in 2013, where she uses metallic nets in stainless steel, brass and copper sheets will also be displayed in the exhibition.
In the interview published in the exhibition’s catalogue, the curator asks the artist: “why does the word “dance” appear so many times when we’re reading texts about your work?”, and asks her to comment on the movement seen in her work. “Actually, the idea of movement is impregnated both in the photographic sequences made from photograms of Super 8 and 16mm films in the 1970s, and in the large installation carried out in 2000 at Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, at Kassel Documenta in 2007 and at Rio MAM in 2015/16. It accompanies diverse and continuous moments of my language until the present day”, answers Iole.
ABOUT IOLE DE FREITAS
Born in 1945, in Belo Horizonte, Iole de Freitas lives and works in Rio. She studied at Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial (ESDI) in Rio de Janeiro, in 1964 and 1965. From 1970 to 1978 she lived in Milan, Italy, where she worked as a designer at the Olivetti Corporate Image Studio. From 1973 on, she has produced and exhibited her artistic work. Among the various solo and group exhibitions around the world the highlights are: the 9th Paris Biennial (1975); the 15th São Paulo International Biennial (1981); the travelling exhibition Cartographies (1993), at Biblioteca Luis Ángel Aranjo (Bogota, Colombia),at Museo de Artes Visuales Alejandro Otero (Caracas, Venezuela), at the National Gallery (Ottawa, Canada), at the Bronx Museum (New York, USA) and at La Caixa (Madrid, Spain); Bienal Brasil Século XX (São Paulo, 1994); the solo show O corpo da escultura: a obra de Iole de Freitas, curator Paulo Venancio Filho, at São Paulo Museum of Modern Art and at Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro (1997); Museu do Açude’s permanent installations project, in Rio de Janeiro (1999); solo show at Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica (Rio de Janeiro, 2000), “Iole de Freitas”, at Museu Vale (Vila Velha, 2004), and "Iole de Freitas", at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro, 2005), all with curatorship by Sônia Salzstein; the 5th Mercosul Biennial (Porto Alegre, 2005).
In 2007 Iole was invited to carry out a specific project for the Documenta 12, in Kassel, Germany, and in 2008 she presented her work at Iberê Camargo Fondation, in Porto Alegre. In 2009/2010 she exhibited her work at Casa França-Brasil (Rio de Janeiro) and São Paulo’s Pinacoteca, and participated in the exhibition O Desejo da Forma at Akademie der Kunst, in Berlin, Germany. From July 2015 until last April, Iole de Freitas occupied the Monumental Space at the Rio MAM with works from her new sculptural research.
