Bahia hosts exhibition of awarded Minas-born photographer Pedro David
“Espiral Contínua” is the title of the exhibition that deals with the artist’s concern with the environment
The intriguing and awarded work of the Minas-born photographer Pedro David can be seen in Salvador at Galeria Roberto Alban from March 3rd for guests and from March 4th for the general public in the exhibition Espiral Contínua. Around 37 photos of the main series developed by the artist throughout his almost twenty-year long career will be on display.
The relationship between men and the environment, natural or urban, and the connection of this relationship with his personal experiences is the theme presented in the exhibition by this photographer, who is one of the most acclaimed of his generation in Brazil.
“I talk about the human condition nowadays, about an accelerated context, with too many people, that grows and moves towards nature…I decided to live outside town in search for more space, to live in a more organic rhythm and reflect about the situation of contemporary men”, explains David.
Among various achievements, Pedro David boasts in his CV the Pierre Verger National Photography Award, Fundação Conrado Wessel Art Award, 12th Funarte Marc Ferrez Photography Award, two editions of the Itamaraty and Museu da República Contemporary Art Awards, Situações, and the international prize Nexo Photo, from Spain, besides carrying out innumerous solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. Some of his works are part of important collections, such as Musée du Quai Branly (Paris/France) and the Museum of Modern Art (São Paulo/Brazil), Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Catarina Art Museum, and others.
The exhibition in Salvador will display photos of the series Madeira de Lei – Sufocamento, which has been awarded various prizes. Among them the Conrado Wessel Art Award, Itamaraty Art Award and the Arte Pará Award and has just been selected for the 16th International Biennial of Photography and Mixed Media Arts in Houston, USA, the Fotofest that takes place in March and April 2016, whose central theme is “Changing Circumstances - Looking at the future of the planet”.
Thirty-two artists from nine countries were selected. From Brazil, only two: Pedro David and Vik Muniz.
Presenting the exhibition, the curator Marcelo Campos empathizes the personal character of the photographer’s work, but also points out the beauty extracted from compositions where the light creates nuances amid different textures, highlighting, for example, the trees of the series Madeira de Lei, “that seem to be intruders in the regularity of the eucalyptus plantations. They are lonely trees, native survivals, struggling for permanence in the intrusion of the eucalyptus field that changes the ecosystem”, says Campos.
This is the second Pedro David’s solo exhibition in Bahia. The first one took place at the Museum of Modern Art, and resulted from the Pierre Verger National Photography Award. “This time I have huge expectations because we made a selection that contemplates works of different moments in my trajectory. The gallery is beautiful, has incredible space that I think will shelter well each one of these works. Besides, it’s the first time I show images of the series Terra Vermelha. I present three great, strong works of this series”, says David.
The series Rota Raiz (the first one developed by the photographer), Coisas Caem do Céu, Madeira de Lei and Terra Vermelha integrate this exhibition.
