Roberto Alban promotes group painting exhibition with previously unshown works
The work of 13 artists from different regions of Brazil, some of which living abroad, will be shown in Fragmentos de um Discurso Pictórico, exhibition that will open on August 23rd, till September 30th in Salvador.
A panorama of Brazilian painting, with the participation of artists of various generations and styles who live in Brazil or abroad, is one of the differentials of the group exhibition, Fragmentos de um Discurso Pictórico, that the Roberto Alban Art Gallery organizes in Salvador, from August 24th to September 30th. The exhibition’s curator is São Paulo-born Mario Gioia, who since 2009 acts as an art critic in the Brazilian and Latin American circuits, with articles in specialized publications and also in curatorship.
“The exhibition is more about the readings that each work may provide. It doesn’t intend to be a panorama that exhausts the discussion about determined characteristics of the language, but that works as an encounter of productions by artists that aren’t commonly related”, says Gioia, pointing out that among the artists are the veterans Fábio Miguez and Sérgio Sister, active since the 1980s – known as the “painting decade” – and emerging talents, such as the São Paulo-born artist Giulia Bianchi (born in 1990), the Rio-born artist Cela Luz (born in 1986) and the artist from Rio Grande do Sul, João GG (also born in 1986). There’s the distinguished presence of new artists represented by Roberto Alban Art Gallery: Antonio Lee, David Magila and Felipe Góes, all presented for the first time at this gallery in Bahia’s capital.
“Every year the gallery invites external curators to bring to Bahia a new look on contemporary art. I believe that Gioia’ curatorship is a good moment to get to know about the great production of the Brazilian painting, through his panorama”, says Cristina Alban.
With most of the canvases being exhibited for the first time, Gioia considers that this is a great opportunity, and one that is no easily repeated, to see reunited in one exhibition works of this quality and by celebrated names in the institutional field and in the market. “Collectors are clearly interested in this language and, because of that, paintings that we admire may stay in private collections for years”, declares the curator, emphasizing the presence of the Bahia-born Lara Viana in the panorama. “I have been following her work closely for at least two years, when her small proportioned canvases were one of Roberto Alban Art Gallery’s attractions at ArtRio”, says Gioia. “Her ability to create very particular atmospheres, through an inspired construction of figuration and abstraction, besides a marked mastering of colors, are one of the exhibition’s highlights”.
Lara divides her time between Salvador and London, where she acquired her Master’s Degree from the prestigious Royal College of Art. Among the recent exhibitions she participated in, it’s worth mentioning Málverkasýning, a group exhibition in Rejkjavik, Iceland, of works by renowned artists like Andreas Eriksson and Melanie Smith.
The artists presented in the exhibition Fragmentos...are: Ana Elisa Egreja, Antonio Lee, Cela Luz, David Magila, Eloá Carvalho, Fabio Flaks, Fábio Miguez, Felipe Góes, Giulia Bianchi, João GG, Lara Viana, Ricardo van Steen and Sérgio Sister. “All the works selected have pictorial characteristics, even when they are presented in other supports, like João GG’s tridimensional that may be read as an expanded painting, and Sérgio Sister’s objects, such as Caixa e o Tijolinho, these pieces that have in the use of color their main attribute”, says Gioia.
Roberto Alban Art Gallery will also promote a talk with the artists Fábio Miguez and Sérgio Sister, mediated by the curator, the day after the opening, Thursday, August 24th, at 5:00pm.

About the Healer
Mario Gioia (São Paulo, 1974).
Independent curator, he graduated from the ECA-USP (School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo) and has been part of the group of critics of the Paço das Artes since 2011, institution where he performed the critic follow-up of Luz Vermelha (2015), by Fabio Flaks, Black Market (2012), by Paulo Almeida, and A Riscar (2011), by Daniela Seixas. He was guest critic from 2013 to 2015 of the CCSP’s Exhibition Program (Centro Cultural São Paulo) and was, in the same institution, part of the group of critics of the Photography Program 2012. In 2015, at CCSP, he was the curator of Ter lugar para ser, group exhibition with 12 artists about the relationships between architecture and visual arts. He has already been the curator of exhibitions in cities such as Brasília (Decifrações, Espaço Ecco, 2014), Porto Alegre (Ao Sul, Paisagens, Bolsa de Arte, 2013) and Rio de Janeiro (Arcádia, CGaleria, 2016). He contributes with art periodicals like Select and was a reporter and writer of visual arts and architecture of Folha de S.Paulo from 2005 to 2009. From 2011 to 2016, he coordinated the project Zip'Up, at Zipper Galeria, for the exhibition of new artists and new projects in curatorship. At the art fair ArtLima 2017, he signed the curatorship of the special section of CAP Brasil, named Sul-Sur.
Ana Elisa Egreja

Egreja graduated in 2005 in Plastic Arts from FAAP. In 2008, she participated in the 11th Santos Biennial (São Paulo, Brazil) and in the same year, she received the prize of the 15th Bahia Show, at MAM Bahia (Salvador, Brazil). Among the recent solo shows are Jacarezinho 92, at Galeria Leme (São Paulo, Brazil, 2017); Da Banalidade: vol.1, at Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo, Brazil, 2016); Galeria Leme (São Paulo, Brazil, 2013); Temporada de Projetos, at Paço das Artes (São Paulo, Brazil, 2010).

Graduated in Plastic Arts from FAAP. Lee works mainly with painting, where he mixes the different languages and styles of modern and contemporary art. He participated in institutional exhibitions such as the Contemporary Art Show at Pinacoteca de Piracicaba in 2012 and 2013 at the FAAP Art Annual, where he was awarded with Art Scholarship in 2012.
Lee carried out his first exhibition Memória Dinâmica at Galeria Luciana Caravello, in Rio de Janeiro, in 2013. In 2015, at Galeria Zipper he exhibited Velocity vs Viscoscity, his first group of abstract works that were highlighted at the channel Arte 1. In 2016, he carried out Pareidolia, his first international exhibition at Galeria Emma Thomas in New York.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1986, Cela Luz acquired her Master’s degree in Fine Arts with emphasis on painting from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2017.
Among her main exhibitions, a solo show at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim in 2015 and two group exhibitions in New York, Cognitive Dissidence, with curatorship by Dan Cameron (New Museum), and Transfiguration, at Flatiron Gallery, Chelsea, both in 2017.
The artist was selected for the Partial Scholarship of the School of Visual Arts and has works in the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, Brazil/MAM-RJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and in private collections.
David Magila

Eloá Carvalho

Eloá Carvalho’s work presents initially the idea of a veiled landscape that suggests a kind of silent narrative, going through the construction of the space through figures, the relationship between them and their attitudes. Most of the images come from photographic registers that the artist seizes and invites us to look at those who look at them. Her ability to generate internal dialogues between the works, the relationship with the movies, her interest in history, scene, the frictions between the pictorial doing, photography and drawing, all these form the artist’s investigative universe.

Among the solo shows are Luz Vermelha at Temporada de Projetos do Paço das Artes (São Paulo, 2015), Solo Project at ARCO Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo (Madrid, 2014), Cinza at Galeria Pilar (São Paulo, 2013), Aéreos at Espaço Zip'Up da Zipper Galeria (São Paulo, 2011).
Besides the exhibitions mentioned above, he participated in many group exhibitions such as Deslize, curatorship by Raphael Fonseca at Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR (Rio de Janeiro, 2014), Premio Internacional de Pintura at Fundación Focus – Anbegoa (Sevilla, 2014), Realidades: Desenho Contemporâneo Brasileiro at SESC Pinheiros (São Paulo, 2011), among others. Fabio Miguez

Painter, engraver and photographer, Miguez graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from FAU/USP. In 1982, he studied engraving in metal with the artist Sérgio Fingermann. Fábio Miguez participated in art biennials such as the São Paulo International Biennial (São Paulo, Brazil, 1985 and 1989), the 2nd Havana Biennial (Havana, Cuba, 1986), the 3rd Cuenca International Biennial of Painting (Cuenca, Equator, 1991) and the 5th Mercosul Biennial (Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2005), besides retrospective shows like the 20th Century Brazil Biennial (1994) and 30th Biennial (2013), both promoted by Fundação Bienal de São Paulo. Felipe Góes

Goés graduated in Architecture. During that period, he exhibited works in cultural events organized by the school’s Academic Directory.
His interest in painting led him to the course of art history with Rodrigo Naves in 2007 and to a study trip throughout Europe in 2008 in order to have direct contact with the collections of important museums.
He attended a painting course with Paulo Pasta (2008-2012) and some disciplines as student auditor in the Art Master’s Program from the ECA_USP. Besides these activities, he participated in shows and group exhibitions.
The artist also carried out solo shows at Galeria Loly Demercian (São Paulo, 2010), Museu de Arte de Goiânia (2012), Usina do Gasômetro (Porto Alegre, 2012), Centro Cultural Adamastor (Guarulhos, 2013) Galeria Transversal (São Paulo, 2013), phICA (USA, Phoenix, 2014), Central Galeria de Arte (São Paulo, 2014), Galeria Virgílio (São Paulo, 2016) and Museu Universitário de Arte, UFU (Ubêrlandia, 2017).

Giulia Bianchi

The daily practice of drawing and related interests led Bianchi to attend the course of Plastic Arts at FAAP (Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado), during 2008 and 2011. At that stage of academic qualification, she was able to try a diversity of media, deepening the pictorial research that she has been carrying out since then. Initially, the works were guided by impulses, appetite, desire to produce; time when her practice was influenced by elements of her daily life, private universe and interpersonal relations. The research that has been developed since then is currently directed to the collective. Through marked brushstrokes, eventual dripping and gesture in contrasting harmony with a well-balanced palette; bodies of undefined contours make themselves present for their power and sensuality. The characters may be seem as a narrative or dissolved in their framing. Bianchi participated in independent group exhibitions, the 41st and 42nd FAAP Art Annual, the 7th Show of Artists without Gallery, 3rd edition of the Compatiarte, among others. In 2016, she was part of the painting follow-up group with Rodrigo Bivar and presently is part of the group of artists Agosto, led by Thiago Honório.
João Gonçalves

Visual artist graduated from the University of São Paulo (ECA USP), Bachelor in Painting. In the last two years participated in several exhibitions, of which the highlights are Disfarce (Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade), O Céu Ainda é Azul, Você Sabe... (Yoko Ono’s Retrospective at Instituto Tomie Ohtake), 66th Paranaense Show (Museu Oscar Niemeyer), Exhibition Programs of MARP and SARP (Museu de Arte de Ribeirão Preto) and Arte Londrina (Casa de Cultura UEL). In 2015, participated in the residency UV Estudios in Buenos Aires, with the following exhibition CINEcatástrofe. Nowadays, he lives in São Paulo and is part of the study and follow-up groups Após o Fim da Arte (led by Dora Longo Bahia and Renata Pedrosa) and Escola Entrópica (led by Paulo Miyada and Pedro França).

Painter, Lara Viana graduated in 1995 from Falmouth School of Art, Bachelor of Arts, and in 2007 M.F.A. Painting, Royal College of Arts, London.
Among several group exhibitions, she participated in Málverkasýning in 2017, at Gallery i8 in Iceland. In 2014, Bahia contemporânea Bahia, at Roberto Alban Gallery with curatorship by Marcelo Campos. In 2011, Mail Art at the Memorial, curator Pablo Ferretti at Galeria Progresso, Porto Alegre, Brazil. In 2010: Art Blitz at Transition Gallery, London; Art Brussels 'Young Talent' Domobaal Gallery, London. Ricardo Van Steen

Multimedia artist, Van Steen has been working since 1976. He was magazine editor and owner of an advertisement company, and today he is a scene director at Movi&Art, Fat Bastards and Modern Times, where he works with different formats: TV advertisements, spots, documentaries and feature films. He is also the founder and creative director of TempoDesign, where he has acted as a consultant to big companies such as Rede Globo, Globosat, Natura and Riachuelo. He coordinates teams for journalistic jobs, films and brand development.
As a plastic artist, Van Steen carried out solo shows at Galeria Paulo Figueiredo (1983), at Galeria Millan (1997) and Noir at Galeria Zipper (2013). Besides these, he participated in several group exhibitions such as Cidades Invisíveis at MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo (2014); 7th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre (2009). In 2006, Paris é Aqui in São Paulo and As linhas do Horizonte at Acervo da Caixa, Galeria Caixa Brasil, in Brasília. Brasiliens Gesichter, at Ludwig Museum, Koblenz in Germany (2005); Galeria Vermelho (2003). He was awarded the 1st prize in the Painting Show at Centro Cultural Brasil Estados Unidos in Santos (1980); Revelation Prize, Panorama de Arte Moderna at Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (1979).
