“Ter e Ser” (Being and Having), a new exhibition of the plastic artist from Ceará, Luiz Hermano, comes out at Roberto Alban Art Gallery in March
The exhibition will show 28 works from March 27th and April 28th
“In the context we live, the work of the artist Luiz Hermano wants to point at this emergency, the fact that consumerism and materialism do not fulfill our small desires or the greater needs of humanity. On the contrary, they’re responsible for the anxiety and frustrations that permeate our society.” This and other statements are part of the text the historian and general director of the Centro Cultural de São Paulo, Ricardo Resende, wrote about the exhibition Ter e Ser that comes out at Roberto Alban Art Gallery on March 27th for guests and from March 28th to April 28th for the public.
Works using shopping trolleys as reference are the majority of the creations shown in the exhibition in a clear allusion to the object that projects, prints and represents consumerism in our society. “The design of these supermarket trolleys became the symbol and indicator of purchase on the internet sale sites. They work as icons to mark the place where the products bought are accumulated. In a way, they represent our consumerist anxiety and the unrestrained desire to buy and buy. In the end, they became the symbol of the consumerism that rages the contemporary society. Consuming is a new way to interact in the 21st century”, explains Resende, who is the exhibition’s curator.
The sculptures and installations by Luiz Hermano, composed of plastic, resin, wire, stainless steel and aluminum, are also part of the exhibition. The work Totem, sculpture that uses eight shopping trolleys, in real size, tied up together is also one of the highlights.
The monumentality in Luiz Hermano’s work is present in diverse public spaces. In São Paulo, in the gardens of USP’s Museum of Contemporary Art and São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, and at the subway station República. In Recife, Pernambuco, the piece Mandacaru, measuring 7 meters, is in exhibition at Cais do Sertão Museum.
About Luiz Hermano
Luiz Hermano Façanha Farias was born in 1954, in Preaoca, city of Cascavel, Ceará. As a child, he used to collect comic books encyclopedias, almanacs and stamps. In the beginning of the 1970s, he studies philosophy and has, since always, drawn. In 1979, Hermano attends engraving classes at the Visual Arts School of Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, he moves to São Paulo and by invitation of Pietro Maria Bardi, holds the exhibition Desenhos, at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand. In 1980, he edits the engraving album called “O Universo”. In 1984, after receiving the Chandon Award, he travels to Paris, where he holds a solo exhibit at Debret Gallery. In 1983, he participates in the 5th Seul International Biennial, and in the 2nd Havana Pan-American Biennial, in 1986. In the 1980s, he dedicated himself, most of all, to painting. In the 1990s, he develops tridimensional works using a variety of materials, such as natural calabashes, copper wires, wires, electronic capacitors, bronze alloys, aluminum, acrylic pieces and various kinds of industrialized pieces, displaced from their usual purposes. In 1987, he exhibits paintings at the 19th São Paulo International Biennial and sculptures in the 21st edition of the event, in 1991. Hermano presents, in 1994, the exhibit Esculturas para Vestir at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. In 2005, he participates in the exhibit Discover Brazil, at Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, Germany. In 2008, he holds the exhibit Templo do Corpo, at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; in the occasion the book Luiz Hermano written by Agnaldo Farias and Kátia Canto was published.
About the curator Ricardo Resende
Ricardo Resende, master in History of Art by the Communication and Arts School of São Paulo University (USP), directed his career to the field of museology. He worked from 1988 and 202, between the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo and the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, when he acted as art-educator, exhibition producer, museologist and finally, exhibition curator. Since 1996, he’s the curator of the Leonilson Project. Resende was the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Centro Cultural Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura, in Fortaleza, Ceará, from March 2005 to March 2007. In 2007, he participated in an artistic residency, as guest critic, in Cali, Colombia. From January 2009 to June 2010, he was the director of the Visual Arts Center of the Fundação Nacional das Artes, of the Ministry of Culture. Currently, Resende is the general director of the Centro Cultural São Paulo, São Paulo. As exhibition curator he organized the exhibit Leonilson: sob o peso dos meus amores, in 2011, at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; I FotoBienalMASP, in 2013, at São Paulo Art Museum and at Oscar Niemeyer Museum.
About Roberto Alban Art Gallery
Founded in 1989, in Salvador, the Roberto Alban Art Gallery aims at fostering the Modern Art from Bahia and Brazil. In April 2013, the Gallery, directed by Cristina and Roberto Alban, opens its new space and with it its new proposal, fostering and promoting the production of Brazilian contemporary art.
The new gallery’s headquarters with an area of 1500m², divided in three floors, was specially designed to host exhibitions of various artistic languages. The highlights are the 140m² main exhibition room with 8m headroom, a 100m² collection room and an outdoor terrace for large sculptures and installations.
In this new moment, the Gallery works with renowned artists of the Brazilian contemporary art, such as Raul Mourão, Elizabeth Jobim, Luiz Hermano, Gabriela Machado, besides encouraging the promotion of contemporary artists from Bahia, like Almandrade, Lara Viana, Willyams Martins and Vinícius S.A., among others. Our goal is to promote these works to institutions, collectors, curators and the public in general, through solo and collective exhibits, besides participating in the main art fairs. We are aware of the importance of marking a turning point in the contemporary art of the Northeastern region. At the same time, our objective is to provide space and visibility to the contemporary art, promoting an interchange between artists, curators, critics and collectors so that there’s exchange, circulation and production of contemporary art beyond the south/southeast axis in Brazil.
